The mechanical behavior of woven material is difficult to study, both from a theoretical and an experimental point of view. These materials can be approached either as a continuous material (macro scale) or as an assembly of woven fibers (micro scale). This title analyzes the textile membranes used in civil engineering. The design of sails for ships, presented in Chapter 2, is a new application which presents many similarities with those of civil engineering. Chapters 3 and 4 are devoted to the analysis of the mechanical behavior of woven fabrics as an assembly of fibers, and also cover the micro-macro transition. Finally, the book concludes by examining the link between the constitutive material of the fiber and its mechanical behavior.
